You can make cute muffins as well. You do have to ensure the cake is VERY cool before trying to remove from the pan if you want them to come out. I have not made the recipe on the package, but I have used the pan a couple times with other recipes I have. I do know that most boxed cake mixes are too fragile and "wet." You need to modify the mix. If you are not into decorating, you can make a sugar glaze to go over top. Downside: requires storage space unless you do a lot of creative baking. Note: The cake details are not as clear with chocolate cake. I made an old fashioned chocolate cake in them, and found I needed to do more decorating with icing to really bring out the fun details. Any difficulty with the pan can only be user error. Chef tip: Any character pan or highly detailed pan requires a cake with a tighter crumb structure (is more firm) than the standard yellow cake boxed mix. If you can't manage to bake from scratch then choose a pound cake or bundt cake mix. When I teach or Demo at Williams-Sonoma, using their pans, appliances etc. I often have to use their mixes to demo pans etc. Any of their bundt cake mixes will work in the fancy Nordic pans. Gluten-Free Baking tips: In my kitchen and in my business, I maintain a strict Gluten-Free environment. I converted the recipe on the back of the package and found it made a bit more than needed to fill the cavities. It was no problem getting the cakes out of the pan. Make sure to grease and flour the pan thoroughly prior to filling them. I just used the old, reliable, yellow cake recipe out of the Betty Crocker Picture cookbook. It took very little effort to get the cakes out. The only downside is cleaning the little crevices and corners which slowed the cleaning process down. The left over food washes out easily, but you'll need a brush to get in the corners and crevices. If you enjoy making cake or muffins in the shape of cars, this is the pan for you. |
